Devon Home talks to Nicola Amos about her successful family-run lighting business – one that is definitely switched on!
How long have you been running Amos Lighting?
We started the business in September 2000.
What services do you offer?
We are one of the region's top suppliers of high-end, design-led lighting. Our products are sourced from around the world and we provide every kind of light, including those for the kitchen, bathroom, outdoors, low energy, or fibre optic. We also provide a design service to cover both lighting and interiors, and we work with architects and interior designers on a range of projects from residential houses to churches.
Our showroom at the Marsh Barton industrial estate on the edge of Exeter showcases our contemporary and traditional products, and our staff can provide instant solutions or can work with customers on large projects from start to finish.
What Devon-based projects are you currently involved with?
We've recently completed the lighting supply at the prestigious Dean Clarke House development in Southernhay. In addition, we have around a dozen Grand Designs-type properties in progress – in various locations from Kingsbridge to Croyde!
What can we find in your showroom?
Well-selected lighting and furniture that has been chosen to represent the best in design and current styles. This includes diverse ranges from beautiful crystal to muted bronze and copper, as well as walnut furniture from Porada and Cattelan Italia – not forgetting a great British brand designed by Sir Terence Conran, Content by Conran, and luxurious bespoke British sofas.
Can you give one top lighting tip for our readers?
A well-placed lamp will always add warmth and comfort to a room. Turn off the downlights and turn on a lamp.
Any trends in lighting this year?
The vintage trend is still strong. Another is exposed industrial lamps hanging from braided or coloured wire (not white plastic!). Also, the seaside meets country look; this includes matt coloured lamps in the Farrow and Ball palette, using teak, bronze, linen and other natural materials.
