In the Showroom With… Claire Williams, Market Carpets

Devon Home speaks to Claire Williams about the success of her long-standing carpet company

Interview

How long has Market Carpets been running?
For 52 years. Market Carpets was established in 1965 by Senior Director Mike Burch, and now has four stores: two in Exeter, one in Exmouth and one in Tiverton.

What services do you offer?
Our company has a unique ‘free fitting’ offer, with fully inclusive prices applied to every product. We are convinced that our customers prefer all-inclusive, easy-to-understand prices, with no hidden extras or add-ons.

It currently has the largest stock of carpets and flooring in the South West stored at the main warehouse in Marsh Barton in Exeter, and distributes daily to its other branches at Exmouth, Tiverton and the Exeter city centre showroom, enabling the company to fit any stock range within a few days.

What piece of advice can you give our readers when buying carpets/flooring?
The main advice is to always choose a hard-wearing carpet on high-traffic areas such as halls, stairs and landings; and opt for a good-quality underlay, as this prolongs the life of the carpet.

Could you share a top design tip with our readers?
If an easily cleanable carpet is needed, choose a manmade polypropylene carpet. Most now advertise that any stain can be removed – even with bleach. A carpet made with wool is still a very good choice too, as it is very hard-wearing.

Are there any current trends we should look out for?
Light greys are very popular this year, giving a lovely clean, modern look. Stripes on stairs are another flooring trend, giving a hallway a wonderful splash of colour. Fitting Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) is a great alternative to vinyl or wood flooring. It is warmer underfoot, gives good sound proofing and is scratch resistant. Plus, they are plank-shaped tiles, making them easier to fit in awkward areas.

Do you have any special offers running in March/April?
Market Carpets holds no sales, as its everyday prices are competitive. The policy is straight forward: all regular ranges are priced free of any additional fitting charges, provided that the room is prepared and cleared. All clearance end-of-roll remnants have one-third off the original price, but are sold as a DIY product. Plain, simple and easy to understand.
