Jennie Cooper talks to renewable energy expert Steve Wykes-Dart about his successful business

Other Interview

SW Dart has over 20 years of experience in the electrical, solar PV (photovoltaic) and renewable energy industry throughout Devon and the South West. Providing eco-friendly, affordable, renewable and sustainable energy, the team is committed to meeting the energy needs of customers to mitigate climate change.

"We are a one-stop shop for renewable energy – supplying plumbing, heating and electrics to both new build homes and retrofits," says Steve. Services include heat and air source pumps, solar PV and solar thermal, as well as electrical and solar PV tests and certification.

What are the benefits? Heat pumps convert the sun's energy, held in the air or ground, into hot water to heat your home. This process delivers green, low-cost, energy-saving heating and hot water all year round. There are two types: ground source and air source.

In off-gas rural areas where mains gas is not available – for example, on Dartmoor where heating is likely to be an oil-based system – the Government is actively encouraging homeowners to investigate installing a heat pump, by offering them a Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payment.

SW Dart offers the installation of both types of heat pumps, resulting in minimal maintenance. They have the following advantages: reduce heating and hot water fuel bills, generate an income from the RHI, lower your home's carbon emissions, eliminate fuel deliveries, heat your home and provide hot water.

The company supplies and fits warm water underfloor heating to provide a heating and hot water system tailored to customer needs. These can be integrated with one of SW Dart's heat pumps. It also specialises in installing solar PV systems.

Steve's business is being recognised for its expertise, being a RHI Installer Finalist at the South West Regional Energy Efficiency & Healthy Homes Awards 2017. It is also delighted to have been nominated for a Local Authority Building Control South West Building Excellence Award for its new-build in Chagford – a stylish oak-framed property that has a complete renewable energy system installed.

"Business is good. We currently get anywhere from one to five, or even six, enquiries a day," says Steve. With renewable energy a hot topic, SW Dart looks to go from strength-to-strength.
