Interview

Where are you based?

Yennadon quarry is situated in south-west Dartmoor. This beautiful area is used by ramblers and horse riders. As a company, we recognise the sensitivities associated with working in this privileged environment and the expectations of the many visitors to the area. We work closely with Dartmoor National Park to maintain the standards applicable to this special part of West Devon.

Tell us a little about your history?

Dartmoor Rustic Stone has been quarried for over 100 years, and since the 1930s, through several generations of the same family. With technological advances, it became economical to re-open the quarry in 2004, and with major investment in plant and machinery, significant improvements to operations have since been implemented. These developments, together with the traditional skills of local quarrymen, ensure that Yennadon produces a consistently high-quality, natural product.

How would you describe your product?

Dartmoor Rustic Stone is a metamorphic material, around 400 million years old! A slate stone, it is available in a range of soft hues from rustic brown spotted to warm yellows, and dark dusty pinks through to dark blues and greys. It can be used dramatically to reflect and complement the natural surroundings and environment, truly enhancing a building or structure.

What is your stone suitable for?

The most popular use of our stone is for small walling items, such as garden walls. It is also used extensively for external facings and cavity walls, and is very well suited to extreme and exposed locations – even sea walls. We supply our product for extensions, conservatories and terraces to homes and gardens throughout Devon and Cornwall.

Do you have any other products?

Pilsamoor Blue is a premium quality North Cornwall slate that is quarried in Egloskerry, situated between Launceston and Camelford. Typical of the North Cornwall coast, Pilsamoor is deep blue in coloration and lightly veined with interesting features. It has excellent durability and is largely used on external facings and cavity walls.
