Property designed by Stan Bolt: Architect

Stan Bolt: Architect

Since its establishment in 1993, this Practice has developed and maintained a reputation for imaginative, site-specific and crafted work – generally within the South West but occasionally further afield and abroad.

Its work is driven by ‘appropriateness’ – a contextual response to a particular function (the brief), in a particular place (the site), at a particular time (the 21st century); brought into being through an expressive but pragmatic approach to building construction.

Each detail of a project is required to fulfil its basic function, while communicating the idea and spirit of the larger work in which it sits. This analytical and considered approach to building, rather than simply a manifesto to style, is the driver and hallmark of the practice’s work, which has attained 14 RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Awards, four Civic Trust Awards, and three Daily Telegraph House of the Year Awards. The Practice has also been included in both Grand Design magazine’s and The Daily Telegraph’s Top Ten National Architectural Practices lists.

Stan Bolt: Architect remains today a small studio, enjoying a close working relationship with clients to produce creative, bespoke solutions for challenging situations. It is not prolific, completing only one or two projects a year, but each is a holistic piece from concept to built detail.

The Practice is as interested in the physics of building construction (energy performance and climate-related robustness of building construction), and the fine detail and textural feel of the work (the arrangement of electrical boxes and ironmongery and choice and expression of materials), as it is in a buildings’ visual appearance, how they function and feel to use, and how they sit in the landscape and relate to the broader environment.
