As specialists in residential and commercial interiors, Caroline Palk and her husband Simon Bantock have decades of experience within the interior design industry. They set up in Ashburton after meeting in London. And having grown up in Devon, Caroline was keen to return to her roots. “Initially, we had a handful of clients and it was just the two of us. Then, we steadily grew,” explains Caroline. “We now have a young team – their fresh talent and clever skills combine with our experience perfectly. Designing is a collaborative business,” she adds.
What is the key to Ashton House Design’s success? Simon’s definition of an interior designer is that they are: “The ultimate multi-disciplinarians... space planners, window dressers, taste testers, waste reducers, number crunchers and cushion fluffers.” Customer relationships are paramount and Caroline says that it is crucial to be “a good listener,” adding: “It is a great privilege that we have the opportunity to be invited into someone’s home as interior specialists, or to redesign their business. We pride ourselves on listening to our clients.”
Supporting other local businesses is also important to Caroline and Simon. “Having built our own Green Oak home on Dartmoor when we first moved here, we have continued to nurture local relationships and commission lots of specialist items from makers in Ashburton and throughout Devon,” explains Caroline.
“We never stop learning in this job. Each project is so different. We could be filling in a swimming pool or designing a bespoke piece of furniture. We love the mixture of what we do – both in the residential and commercial sectors – as you never know day-to-day what will be next,” she adds.
One of Ashton House Design’s latest commercial projects is the design and installation of a new spa at the boutique AA 4-star Lincombe Hall Hotel in Torquay. The £2m development involved a complete fit-out, using high-specification features and the latest in luxurious spa technology. Guests have a host of treatments and facilities to experience, including halotherapy in the Himalayan Salt Room, the Scandinavian Sauna, the Aromatherapy Steam Room and a Cold Therapy Ice Room (with an ice fountain).
The 15m indoor lap pool and 13m hydro pool – with 10 different stations, each with air jets and volcanoes (pressurised bubbles) – sit within a wraparound windowless setting to help guests relax.
The combination of ambience and amenity in this luxurious setting is bound to be another winning project for the Ashton House Design team.
