The team, headed by company director Kim Whinnett, has been designing and building bespoke kitchens and free-standing furniture for over 35 years. “We have experience of building kitchens in every style, from classic farmhouse to contemporary. We pride ourselves on expert, innovative design skills, superb craftsmanship and exceptional attention to detail,” says Kim.

She adds: “We design in our Ashburton studio where our showroom is located and liaise very closely with the team at our workshop, which is roughly three miles away in Buckfastleigh. Everything is handmade from scratch for our experienced joiners to install.”

“Our designer approaches each new kitchen differently, and works with the customer to create a space suited to their individual requirements. As the style and character of a home informs and influences the design, our highly skilled craftsmen can make almost anything possible!” she explains.

“Our starting point is to visit your home. It’s vital we understand how your kitchen will be used, what storage space you require, your budget and timescale, and the overall look you wish to achieve. We advise on materials and finishes, and how to work around the quirks of old buildings. We firmly believe that your kitchen should be made to fit your home, not the other way around!” says Kim.

The team draws up an initial design concept, to include detailed planning of storage and use of space. Then materials, appliances and finishes are discussed. As every Barnes kitchen is made by hand, the company can control costs and tweak a design to ensure your dream space remains within budget. “We will project manage the whole process and provide a full installation service,” adds Kim.

The company has developed good working relationships with local suppliers of worktops, range cookers, appliances and lighting to ensure the customer gets the best. Working with local timber merchants, the company ensures all the wood used to build its kitchens meets FSC certification specifications.

The skilled makers at Barnes don’t just create kitchens. They can design and build bespoke furniture, and free-standing pieces for any part of your home.
