House designed by Infinite Design Devon

Big Views in Bigbury

Interior designer Anna Kalnars from Infinite Design Devon helped redesign the Scoreys’ Bigbury home to make the most of the superb sea views

6 March 2014

It was while on a family holiday in South Devon that Chris and Verity Scorey fell in love with their Bigbury house, which overlooks Burgh Island and Bigbury Bay.  The house had recently been rebuilt to an architect’s designs on the footprint of a run-down property, but the couple soon realised that it still needed work. They approached Kingsbridge-based interior designer Anna Kalnars at Infinite Design Devon to carry out the redesign, along with local builder Richard Mitchell from Modbury Developments.

One of the first things Anna addressed was the manner in which the open-plan living room connected with the kitchen and dining area, which was three steps lower. The upper level commanded superb sea views over the bay, but this couldn’t be seen from the kitchen because of solid partition walls and staircase balustrading. Anna replaced this with bespoke glass balustrading and low-iron glass for clarity.

She also obtained planning permission to extend two narrow balconies off the living area and master bedroom, and to install new Velux windows. Another key redesign was creating a new entrance for the master bedroom’s en suite, which enabled the bed to be positioned to look out onto the new glazed balcony and sea views.

MGM Landscapes from Loddiswell used reclaimed railway sleepers in the garden and installed a paved driveway with a sustainable drainage system, to complete Anna’s redesign.
