Dream Devon Home

A View to Savour

Located in a prime position overlooking the Teign estuary, this Shaldon property was designed specifically for the owners’ requirements

1 January 2016

Sarah and Keith Mason had been looking for some time to downsize from their large, modern home in Shaldon when a 1960s’ bungalow in an exceptional location came on the market a few doors up the road from them. With a keen eye for design, Sarah knew the plot had huge potential, so they instructed Chris Cunningham at Totnes-based architects Harrison Sutton to design them a home.

Finalising the design and gaining planning permission took a year. The brief was to create a contemporary, streamlined home that took full advantage of the spectacular views across the estuary. A small gym, swimming pool, office, en-suite bedroom and dressing room were also ‘must-haves’.

The relatively steep plot meant that, at some expense, soil nails had to be in place before any building work could start. However, once works commenced in full, the process was relatively stress-free thanks to a great team of local tradesmen and specialist companies. In particular, Touch Design Group – Exeter-based designers and manufacturers of high-end interiors – worked closely with Sarah to design and create a totally bespoke kitchen, which is very much the focal point of the home.

The build took two-and-a-half years, during which time Sarah enjoyed sourcing the key elements of the interior, many of which she was able to find in Devon. The result is a shining example of the quality of build and design coming out of Devon. “We have everything we want, in the most fantastic location,” says Sarah. “We feel incredibly lucky to live here.”
