The Ashton House Design team

Ashton House Design

Ashton House Design is a team of interior designers based in Ashburton, working throughout Devon, Cornwall, the South West and beyond. Carrying out projects in the residential and commercial sectors, the team creates inspiring spaces for homes, offices and hospitality, along with award-winning spa interior design.

Interior design is a collaborative process – when you engage Ashton House Design, you procure a team of professional designers, negotiators and planners. The team quickly establish how interior spaces can come to life and how they will be used in real terms.

“The way we all live and work is affected deeply by the environment in which we spend our time. Ashton House Design has seen lives and businesses re-energised and transformed after the work is completed,” says Director Caroline Palk.

What services does Ashton House Design provide?

Director Simon Bantock answers: “Our team offers a huge range of interior design services to help take care of your project in the best way possible, including space planning, lighting design, bespoke joinery solutions and bathroom design. Made to measure upholstery, often designed and made in Devon, really sets us apart and ensures individual and creative solutions for all of our projects.”

Caroline adds: “There really aren’t any loopholes in our service – hand-sewn curtains, floor and wall finishes, bespoke rug designs woven to order, advice on kitchen design – there are so many complex and layered elements, and after decades of designing, we have it covered! We’re a flexible team and are just as happy working on a single room makeover, as we are on an entire home. We adapt to suit the needs of our clients.”

What is your interiors background?

Interior Designer Kate Venables says: “I’ve always loved creating spaces for others to enjoy. After graduating, I worked in London for various interior design companies, including David Linley. I moved back to Devon in 2009 (doesn’t everyone), and have been part of Ashton House Design ever since.

I really enjoy the variety of projects here. Meeting clients, liaising with them to achieve the design and style they’ll love and, of course, installation day itself.”

Why do you love working here, and what has been your most fun project to date?

Interior Designer Hannah Hember replies: “Simon and Caroline have created such a lovely environment, being at work feels like being with my family. I love my job and while I’m on my maternity leave, I really miss our inspirational design studio and getting creative with my colleagues on exciting projects.

The Cornish Country House was one of my favourite projects. It was exciting in many ways – we had an extremely tight deadline to work with. We also had the logistical demands of getting our orders approved, placed, delivered to our premises, checked over and then delivered to the project address in the timeframe. We managed the expectations of our client, and ultimately pulled together a complete overhaul of a large country home.

Working alongside Caroline and Sarah was my favourite part of the project. We had a great system together and, although stressful at times, I really loved being part of such an inspirational team.

Can you tell us about your interiors background, and share a design tip with us?

Interior Designer Jemma Barnard explains: “After graduating with a degree in Interior Decoration, Design and Styling, I went on to complete a range of projects from high-end residential, to visual merchandising, education and healthcare design. I apply my creativity to all aspects of life, seeking inspiration wherever I go, whether when travelling, at art exhibitions, or in conversations with others.”

Interior design is all about creating feeling and emotion, expertly crafting a space that truly represents the user. I believe you should always aim for something textural, layered functional and expressive. Ultimately, it should be a space to be adored.”

How long have you worked here, and what does your role entail?

Sarah Walter has been working with Ashton House Design for 15 years. “My role covers all elements of assistance with our many design projects, to include (but not limited to) estimating, checking in, invoicing (my favourite thing!) and ensuring things run as smoothly as possible from start to finish. It is far more paperwork than people realise, but I get to see all the beautiful ideas come to fruition through the wide range of projects I am involved in.”

Describe your role and what it’s like to be an interior designer?

Interior Designer Hope Biggs loves the team aspect of working at Ashton House Design. She says: “Generally, my role entails the development of technical drawings for properties, including floor and lighting plans, along with 3D visuals of bespoke joinery pieces. I also develop schemes alongside Simon and Caroline, and prepare detailed estimates for our projects.

Being an interior designer means that we enjoy seeing the process of a client’s home coming to life – becoming a home with true character rather than just bricks and mortar. Seeing the finished product at the end truly defines job satisfaction!”
