For the last ten years, family team Matt Robinson and José Cortizo have run JAM Interiors Group from their design studio and showroom on Exmouth Marina. Past commissions have included work on the Foot Anstey offices in Plymouth and at The Jack in the Green near Exeter, along with a project at the Virgin Airways first-class lounge at T5, yet the core of the business is residential design projects throughout the south of England.
The company takes on interior design commissions from concept and space planning through to colours, floorings, lighting, furniture and furnishings, as well as kitchen and bathroom design. The in-house designers and project managers work closely with the client throughout the process.
The company has expanded through a number of acquisitions to form the current group. Devon Stone covers all aspects of indoor and outdoor natural stone, which is a key element of JAM’s designs. One of the largest product ranges in the South West was recently boosted with the addition of the Italian brand Bisazza, adding mosaic art to its current stone range. With an installation team highly skilled in flooring, future plans include branching out into other flooring solutions including wood and ceramics.
The acquisition of Devon-based Inside Spaces in 2009 brought in a specialism in complicated window treatments and soft furnishings. This was further increased a year later, when the group took over Curtain Call Workshop, so that all furnishings and upholstery are manufactured in house.
Last year the marina showroom was expanded to allow JAM to present more of the furniture and lighting products used in its designs, and in particular to display the French furniture range by Ligne Roset, awarded exclusively to the company for the South West of England.
The team at JAM is working on 20 to 30 new-build projects at any time. These range from complete designs to refurbishments of varying scale and complexity. It is currently working on ten properties in the Salcombe area alone!
“While we make regular trips to London and the continent to ensure we are still on trend, there are big advantages in being based in Devon,” says Matt. “We are blessed here will an incredible set of manufacturers and artisans who produce the most fantastic work in a whole range of fields that rivals any of the quality found in the capital.”
JAM has a strong network of key suppliers, meaning the same team works together on each project. “We do need to have the final overview but we also need to be able to rely on great partners in specific areas such as bespoke joinery and audio-visual installations. Barton Solutions in Kingsbridge supports us brilliantly with all our technological requirements, Start Point Flooring in Loddiswell carpets our homes beautifully and Ed at Shaw Stephens produces timeless joinery designs. It’s all about the team.”
