Melanie Orzechowska is the founder of Ivy & Ethel, a brand of handcrafted, high-end wallpaper designs.
Ivy & Ethel was born out of a collection of prints, drawings and paintings created by talented artist Melanie Orzechowska. “These designs had been patiently waiting in the depths of my understairs cupboard. I couldn’t help but think they would make extraordinary wallpapers,” she says. Countless scans, hours in Photoshop and many late nights later, Ivy & Ethel came to life. “Though I wish I had a more elaborate story to share, that’s truly how it all began!” she adds.
Originally from Yorkshire and a graduate in Fashion Design from Northumbria University, Melanie’s home is now in Devon. With a background in fashion and interior design, she completed a placement with the esteemed textile designer Zandra Rhodes, and later “spent five enriching years in the ceramics industry,” as a new products and surface pattern designer.
Melanie explains: “Craftsmanship holds a special place in my heart, and I wholeheartedly incorporate various traditional printing methods into my work. My signature style revolves around hand-drawn, screen-printed, or linocut pieces, which I refined during my time at the Double Elephant Print Studio in Exeter.”
The natural world is abundant in her lively, colourful work. “I find immense joy in seeking fresh inspiration, particularly amid the moors and coastlines that surround me. I capture the beauty I encounter through photographs and translate them into designs at my kitchen table – a process that always accompanies a steaming cup of coffee and a slice of cake!”
Melanie also offers a bespoke service: “I’m excited to work with you to create a wallpaper design that perfectly suits your space and style. My designs are intended for both adults and children, and any designs I’ve already created can also be recoloured to match your preferences.
