Cathryn Bishop, Cornish Interiors

Cornish Interiors

Devon Home talks to Cathryn Bishop, owner and managing director of Cornish Interiors, about her interior design journey and one of her latest projects.

Cornish Interiors has over 15 years of experience providing high-end interior design and project management services.

Cathryn and her team work with both residential and commercial clients, and her portfolio comprises a diverse collection of completed projects – from period houses and new-build homes to restaurants, hotels and rental properties.

As a small business, Cornish Interiors provides a personal, tailor-made service. Cathryn explains that most of her clients have a sense of how they want their home or business space to look, but not necessarily the time, experience or expertise to make it happen.

An interior designer for 24 years, Cathryn has a wealth of experience. “I did an Art Foundation course and then studied for a degree in Spatial & Interior Design for three years. I worked for various large property developers before setting up my own practice, and I’ve designed all sorts of projects: hotels, retail spaces, restaurants, cafés, and a lot of private housing and show homes. I’m also a university lecturer, leading the interior design and styling BA at Arts University Plymouth, and a regional ambassador of the British Institute of Interior Design,” she explains.

To understand the sort of work involved in her designs, Cathryn describes one of her latest projects – the beautiful Bovisand Harbour development in Plymouth. “We were approached by the developers of Bovisand Harbour in 2018 and this project has several phases,” she says. “Our role is to design all the base finishes, bathrooms, kitchens, lighting and hard finishes to a luxurious standard, as well as design and fit out the show homes and support those purchasers who want to put an individual stamp on their properties. We’re currently completing Phase I, which is six houses, and then moving on to Phase II, which is 40 apartments. We then get on to the Fort itself, which is a scheduled monument!” Cathryn continues.

The team took inspiration from the textures and tones found at this superior coastal location to create warm, inviting spaces from which the residents can watch the ever-changing views over the water.

“We sourced locally, including oak flooring, designer kitchens and bathrooms, and original paintings inspired by the coast from artist Richard Sunderland – all of which help reflect the stunning location of these homes,” Cathryn says, adding: “We’re excited to be involved in the ongoing development of the site, helping purchasers personalise their properties and creating spaces from which residents can enjoy this gorgeous part of the Devon coast.”

Cathryn and her team take a very collaborative approach to their work, meeting with the developers and the agents who are selling the properties in this instance. “We always want to ensure our designs are a good fit with what our clients, and the current purchasers of the properties, are looking for.”
