Devon Home talks to Cyril Gosling, director of Surface-it Solutions in Chudleigh, about the aspects of groundworks the company offers.
This family-run business was born out of Cyril’s passion for surfacing and groundworks that he developed when he helped his father as a teenager, during school holidays and weekends.
“I finished school in 1997 and started working for my dad’s well-established company – Bovey Macadam. This involved installing groundworks, tarmac driveways, block paving and patios,” explains Cyril.
As time has gone on, the scope of work that people need has evolved. “Along with continuing to work with dad, in 2014, I decided to start my own company installing resin-bound driveways – Surface-it solutions. I did some training with a company specialising in resin-bound driveways. I also invested in a resin mixer and completed my first installation for a friend in Newton Abbot,” he adds.
The team at Surface-it Solutions is made up of Cyril Gosling, Brad Rooney, Mark Bolt and Ben Head. They supply all aspects of groundworks such as garden/driveway design, resin-bound driveways, patio installation, artificial grass, decking and fencing. “We can build retaining walls and planters, and install garden lighting. We’ve even created putting greens in gardens,” says Cyril.
Providing excellent customer service and satisfaction is a top priority. “I love all our garden renovations. When you visit someone whose outside space is basic or in a bit of a mess, it’s always an amazing feeling when the customer is so happy with what we create and how we transform the space.”
Among Cyril’s favourite projects was a new build that had a big, square garden. “It had lawn seed chucked on it and left to grow. We redesigned the whole space to add character but maintain its practicality. We installed a porcelain patio and built a pergola area, complete with a BBQ and pizza oven, plus an area for preparing food and drinks,” Cyril says. “As the customer is a keen gardener, we also built some gorgeous wooden sleeper planters, in which we installed a water feature, adding lights in the sleepers to illuminate the garden in the evenings. Artificial grass was chosen for the lawn, complete with a bright, resin-bound path.
“We are a local family-run business that helps customers to get the garden/driveway they’ve always wanted. From start to finish, the customer is our number one priority and we don’t want to lose that,” Cyril concludes.
