The beautiful, timber-framed Beach End – built by Carpenter Oak – demonstrates that good design doesn't date

Perched on the banks of the River Dart, Beach End is a familiar sight for locals and river goers. Its prominent pentagonal oak frame hugs the neighbouring cottage and large rectangular windows frame spectacular views the length of the estuary.
It has been in Patrick Robinson’s family since 1969 and – having been the perfect venue for numerous gatherings and parties for decades – was in serious need of refurbishment. Brilliant design doesn't date. Patrick and his wife, Susie, undertook the refurbishment and remodelling of this property almost a decade ago, instructing timber frame experts Carpenter Oak to carry out the redesign.
The existing cottage was also extended to include a large, open-plan kitchen and dining room, with the east-facing, glazed gable end allowing for panoramic views up and downstream.
Being surrounded by water lent itself perfectly to a boathouse space, situated below the oak frame with slipway access to the water. “We recognised the opportunity to do something really special. We knew a timber frame would look and feel good internally and externally, and sit easily on a very prominent site,” says Patrick.
“The timber frame structure is the outstanding feature of the house. It looks great but unostentatious from the river and provides a wonderful outlook. At high tide, you feel you are actually over the water,” adds Patrick.
