Barc Architects in Exeter transformed the ground floor of Birch House by creating an open-plan extension tailored to modern living
23 August 2024
Barc Architects was tasked with transforming the ground floor of Birch House, a 1990s family home, into a contemporary, open-plan space to better suit the needs of modern living.
The original layout included a dark kitchen, cramped dining area and a rarely used conservatory. The clients wanted a brighter, more spacious home that connected seamlessly to the garden and provided space for family and entertaining.
Barc removed the outdated conservatory and extended the living space to the rear and side of the property, opening up the floor plan and redefining the flow of the home, introducing a new front entrance and strengthening the connection to the garden beyond. The use of soft handmade brick for the extension’s new facade was a deliberate decision to harmonise with the original redbrick property.
For the interior, Barc worked with the client to select natural materials to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. One of the standout features is the ceiling skylight, crafted from white-washed birch ply with exposed joists.
The architects carefully balanced open-plan design with distinct, functional spaces. The kitchen features sleek cabinetry and ceramic tiles, while the utility zone (created adjacent to the kitchen) helps keep these main areas clutter-free.
The living area, which opens onto the garden, has been designed as a relaxing and social space. Comfortable seating, natural textures and neutral colours create a calming atmosphere, while the large windows and bi-fold doors ensure plenty of light. The seamless flow from indoors to outdoors makes the garden feel like a natural extension of the home.
