Decking outside The Cabin

Double Design

A rundown outbuilding and new annex have been converted and created into two luxurious, practical living spaces at a South Hams property

25 January 2021

Caroline Palk from Ashton House Design in Ashburton was appointed to build, project manage and design The Annex and The Cabin at a property near Kingsbridge, having already completed work in the main house for her client. “The main house is a 17th-century Gate Keepers Lodge, so we wanted to retain the character of the original building. We used original stone and reclaimed Welsh slate of a smaller size to suit the scale of the smaller outbuildings,” Caroline says.

“Our brief was to convert a rundown outbuilding into comfortable guest accommodation, and create a cabin retreat in the garden to serve as a study, party destination and space for family gatherings,” says Caroline. “The Annex is a self-contained slice of luxury with sleeping, sitting and showering amenities. The Cabin is cedar-clad, complete with wood-burning stove, a bespoke French-style mattress seating platform and drinks fridge (all made in Devon) – offering a place to work, play and retreat in.”
