The Brandy Thief in Ilfracombe is a luxurious coastal cottage in North Devon. Rich in seafaring history, it is a now peaceful retreat
1 March 2020
On the edge of Lee Beach, awash with history, this cottage was believed to have once been used by prolific bootlegger Hannibal Richards. The Brandy Thief is now a serene, characterful family home, with jute-lined floors and timber rafters.
Three bedrooms have original floorboards and beautiful sea views: the master bedroom with a super-king sized bed is ensuite, there’s a twin room, and another super-king size bed in the third room. An antique roll-top bath is found in the bathroom.
The well-equipped kitchen includes a Smeg fridge-freezer, a further small fridge, oven, ceramic hob, Nespresso coffee machine, dishwasher and washer-dryer. Stone floors and a leather studded armchair add to The Brandy Thief’s charm.
Facing Lee Bay, the property’s patch of lawn couldn’t be more perfectly situated. The South West Coast Path runs in front of the property, from where you can enjoy exploring secret coves and clifftops.
