The award-winning interior design company, Ashton House Design, works on projects all over the UK and further afield, yet has its roots on Dartmoor

Having founded Ashton House Design in 1992, with an office based in Ashburton, Simon Bantock and Caroline Palk have forged close links to Dartmoor and Devon. “Not only is this town a gateway to the moors, but there is also a community of like-minded businesses and, geographically, it’s a good point for the rest of the county,” says Simon. “Dartmoor is really where it all began for us – our first project on Dartmoor was, in fact, our own house.”
The couple bought an asbestos-clad bungalow in a beautiful plot, on which they designed and built their current home.” We replaced it with a green oak-framed building with lots of glass,” explains Simon, who adds that the house has been cited by the Dartmoor National Park as: “the way to build on Dartmoor.” Sourcing sustainably is a key part of any Ashton House Design project, and some of the granite used in their own home came from a Dartmoor quarry that they can see from their windows.
Here are three examples of Dartmoor projects that Ashton House Design has been involved with recently.
This project involved updating a traditional moorland home that complements its beautiful location, while providing a comfortable, liveable family space with interiors to be enjoyed. “We opted for rich, warm tones with a contemporary touch here and there,” explains Simon. The result is a clean, fresh look.
Ashton House Design was asked to consider electrical and lighting solutions, room layouts, decorating schemes, floor finishes, furniture, furnishings and window treatments.
With careful planning of layouts, joinery and finishes, the family kitchen works particularly well. The original lighting is an arrangement of porcelain pendants and huge enamel shades, with a mix of both task and ambient lighting.
The counter seating, comfy sofa, swivel armchairs and dining chairs ensure seating for all the family, whether dining, snacking, relaxing, watching TV, doing homework, or just admiring the spectacular view.
Ashton House Design has created award-winning commercial spas. However, as Simon explains: “This offered us a very exciting opportunity, as it was a private project. Our brief was to design the interior for a Dartmoor spa, enjoying a wonderful outlook. Set within a family home, it needed to provide a tranquil haven for everyone, with a fitness amenity, a chill-out retreat, a party destination, as well as being aesthetically pleasing, of course.”
Simon had the scope to be really creative. “For example, we designed this lounging area with a band-sawn kitchen in it. We sourced a copper leaf tile behind the splashback and in the recesses – using the earthy tones that are found out on the moor. Working alongside the architect, we planned the spa’s interior spaces, the finishes and the ambience. This included a feature candlelit wall and a charred ‘peaty’ palette with copper detailing.”
The picture window frames the views – displaying the burnt orange tones outside, which also inspired the copper-coloured towels.
“This is a high-quality interior, yet understated and tranquil. This calmness is also echoed in the materials used, such as the slate with its peaty shades.” Simon adds.
This brief for this project was for it to be used as a family home – to feel like it reflected the landscape it sat in, being located on a majestic part of the moor.
“We transformed the ordinary interiors of this farmhouse and barn, drawing inspiration from outside. We wanted this relationship to be tangible throughout our choice of finishes, colour palette, textures and craftsmanship,” explains Simon.
Ashton House Design created several standout spaces for this Dartmoor Farmhouse, reconfiguring bathrooms, overhauling lighting and fully furnishing the interior.
Using natural and local materials wherever possible, the colour scheme is earthy, yet light and warm. “We mimicked those shades and tones that you see from the windows, and worked alongside talented local craftspeople, makers and contractors to realise our vision. “Fleeces from a Dartmoor shepherd and hazel coat hooks fashioned by a local hedgesmith feature in the project” says Simon.
